DM-Hypsophobia (UT2003)

Hypsophobia, an irrational fear of heights. Taking into consideration some of the falls competitors suffer in this arena, it isn't surprising! After you're shot off a high-level gantry into the inky blackness, cracking your neck on a handful of steam pipes on the long way down, lets see how you feel about Hypsophobia... Well said and well designed classic DeathMatch map that will please most of the loyal Ut2k3 fans out there. This is an indoor facility setting with pipes and wires and conduits and all kinds of goodies for your fragging pleasure. The map has decent flow to it but seems to lack some of the "Z" axis stuff that many DeathMatch players seem to find near and dear to their hearts. I mean there's some of that stuff in the center area of the map but none that really gets you flowing into multiple frags and double kills to help you catch up if you should fall behind in points. The map is basically a square with two doors on each side of the center area that allows you to exit onto the long ramp/cat walks that circle the map. You use these catwalks to go into the center section of the map that I mentioned and never know who is going to be coming out as you head in and visa versa.

My issue with this map is that the textures, while good, are too Silver in color and needs additional coloring to help distinguish player model skins from the map itself. Epic messed up as it is with these skinny little player models and the silver tones to there body Armour added to the silver back ground was just a little too much for my old eyes. The map needs contrast in a big way or better-colored lighting to distinguish player from textures in this map. The lighting is good; especially in the first snap shot where the reflection from the yellow light outlines the large fan below it. I took that as my first snapshot for a reason, because I wanted you to see what good lighting can do for a map area. Now look at the rest of the map and although it is well lit it just lacks lighting that helps the game play IMO. It's good lighting for a different texturing scheme but not for silver on silver.

The BOTs played well and I had to stay sharp to beat them set for "ADEPT" they used the entire map and all weapons well. I wish, as I do on many maps, that there was custom music on this board because the atmosphere is good but could have been much better. There are some ambient sounds but nothing that sticks out and makes a statement. Weapons were well placed but I would have preferred to spawn closer to the action as opposed to being way out of the loop as it is now. It always seems that I was losing precious seconds just getting back into the mix of the fighting and it cost me my first time playing this map because I lost by one frag, which could have been due to the distance I had to travel once I re-spawned. Some of the hallways are quite long as well and seemed a bit excessive at times. The center area of the map also just seemed a bit cramped and could have been made bigger to open up the action a bit more. You can guess what color the center section of the map is, so it was also hard to see in there too.

Over all this is a decent DeathMatch map that should please most and disappoint some but it's a good running, decent paced map.

Bottom Line: This one is worth a look but it's very Silver and needs some contrast badly. The good game play should please most of you.

Overall, I found this map dull and boring. As I jumped another bot from an overhead catwalk, I thought "old stuff, seen it before."This is definitely the least of Ed Duke-Cox's works.

I think with better Team Colors on the standard and custom models, the UT2003 models could be better. The BrightSkins has helped out a bit though.

I dont have much of a gripe with the player models. Anyway, only map comments here guys, if you want you can start a thread in the forums.

RH, I couldn't disagree more. One of the reasons that this game IS NOT the success Epic expected is the player models. Look at UT player models and compare and if I wanted to shoot ants I would use my garden hose. They are so STUPID small and thin that people with older eyes, like me, can't tell textures from players at a distance. It's why many UT players went over to Counter Strike IMO. Whatever happened to just Red & Blue player models that were easy to see and frag? sigh...

Good map.

Clark Kent, I do not agree with you about the models for Ut2003. I can picked one off when it's so far across an arena(CTF-Bedrooms Remix) that it looks like the size of an ant.
After all there is brightskins.

Hmmmm. Funny you should say that Clarky. There may be a CTF coming soon, but I won't spam about it forever here. However, I will pimp the Epic endorsed Pro-Mappack being developed by myself and many, many other top notch mappers. For more details head on over to :

Thanks Ed Duke-Cox, I am glad we see eye to eye. I had fun playing this map and like I said it has good things in it. I can't wait to see what your next maps looks like. How about a CTF map for Father Clark? hehe

Hey, this was my first ever UT2k3 map :)
I totally agree with this review, as it really is quite dull compared to the custom maps the community expects these days. Even when I first released it way back when UT2k3 came out, I think it must have got the Ownage from the fun factor, as it really isn't much of a looker at all. Thanks again to Clark Kent for a rock solid review. Really can't argue with the man on a single point.

Here's a blast from the recent past! I remember playing this when it first came out and was one of the first good maps for UT2003. Some better ones have come out since then, but this was sitting in someone's review queue for a while and was just recently reassigned; so here it is. I hope you like industrial and some hallways are long, but it's still a kick.

Its ok, I think it was one of the first maps to get ownage, layouts a bit boring though.

I've had this map for a long time and it is enjoyable, despite the lack of Z-axis combat and the fact that it's a bit bright. Otherwise, It's tight and fast-paced. And for the most part, I do agree with the review.

PS: Did I mention that this map won an Ownage award...
