A wild name, wild looking map and wild CTF action here in CTF-PRIS-Excoriate, whatever the hell that means. Well since I didn't know what it means I looked it up and here is what it means. Word of the Day for Saturday September 2, 2000 excoriate \ek-SKOR-ee-ayt\, transitive verb: To express strong disapproval of; to censure scathingly; to denounce. To flay; to strip, scratch, or peel off the skin of; to abrade; to chafe. Well that clears things up doesn't it, so if you play this map it will tear your skin off! Sounds like fun so let's read on shall we.
The map is a symmetrical layout with multiple flag routes and is quite challenging. This map really struck me as being quite odd until I started playing it and there was nothing odd about it after that. The game play is very good, which is what all this is really about isn't it? It's a nice sized map that can hold 12 players easily with all of the bases and corridors to cover. While the game play is quite good the rest of the things we look for seem to have been over looked just a little bit. Yes there are jump pads, elevators and lots of ways to attack the base but the music, sounds and lighting are just average. There’s canned UT2k3 tunes and although it's a good choice it doesn't really help the atmosphere as much as it could have with custom tunes. I only noticed 2-3 ambient sounds which is very low for a map of this size and I was disappointed at that aspect. There was very little attention paid to lighting and although there are lights in the map they don't seem to be the source of the light for the respective areas of the map. The skybox is plain and could have used something to spice things up since this was supposed to be the inside of a volcano and there's no lava or lava spouting from cracks in the floor of the base, things like that would have helped a lot.
BOTs played well on defense and offense and used several different flag routes to try to score. They followed commands and did add nicely to the game play, which is quite good. I liked the rear base escape route because it limits the pursuit to a narrow corridor where the flak canon is placed and that is not by accident either. The author knew what he was doing when he left that weapon there. The author also left the shock rifle above the flag stand on the upper level which is a good defensive placement because the over lap in the base is not that open as to allow the shock to totally dominate in a defensive mode. The mini gun and rockets are just outside the bases with the double damage on top of the center structure, the super shield is on top of the roof of the bases as is the sniper gun. So I will have to give credit to the author on weapons placement because there was definitely thought given to that aspect of the map. I just wish the sounds, music and lighting got the same amount of attention so I could have scored this map higher than I did. More maps by this author can be found here.
Bottom Line: A fun CTF map with good BOT and game play. Definitely worth the download but don't expect anything special with the lack of good music, sounds and lighting in this map, but for CTF action, it's in there!

It's tough to CTF in this one and it's probably better online. I did notice that this could be a sniper's paradise though. Also, when jumping around on this map, please be careful not to get excoriated on those spikes, hehe.
